The trip from Luxor to Abydos, in a caravan under armed guard, gave us a rare glimpse of the Egyptian countryside.

The largest, and perhaps most beautiful temple on the trip was at Karnac. Our wonderful guide Hanan is in the foreground as she leads back from a sacred Sehkmet site on the edge of the grounds

We were also fascinated by this hoopoe, a bird that appears in ancient Egyptian murals and mythology.
