Exploring Appletreewick

Mystery author Cassandra Chan zero-ed in on the tiny village of Appletreewick (pronounced, Ap trek') as providing the type of setting she was looking for, so we (well, mostly her) did some in-depth exploring.
Burnsall ..... Flamborough ..... York

We set off on the narrow road that leads the short distance from Burnsall to ...

One of our first and frequent stops in Appletreewick was the Craven Arms for the warmth of the
fireplace, good ales and cider and to wait for Cassie to return from her windy hike. Jack and the rest of us also stopped at the nearby New Inn.

The Craven Arms is proud of its recreation of an authentic "cruck barn," which is rented out for special occasions, such as weddings.

Of course, Appletreewick has a large population of sheep, the four-footed kind.

And also, some very attractive historic homes.

This is known as Craven Cottage

This large home has a
Mock Beggar's Hall

Though the lands are private, of course, the entries are very welcoming.

Fancy a stroll through a garden.

Even the plants in the pavement look like they've been growing there for centuries.

The stocks on the village square.

In spite of a near gale blowing, Cassandra struck out over the Dale at Appletreewick.

Guess what ... more sheep!

She was rewarded with fabulous views ...

... and gnarly vegetation, showing  the wear of the rough environment.

 Another view along the way.

A creek wends it way among the rocks.

One of the landmarks that added to the appeal of the trek was Troller's Gill.

Back to Burnsall ... then on to Flamborough ... or skip to York
