For some reason, it's taken me forever to get these photos up. In the meantime, I've forgotten where a lot of them were taken. It was on our tour of 40 with the University of Iowa. The people were great, but 40 is too many to see anything. Still loved the beauty of Tuscany. (Photos by Jack and Mary, September 2011)

We were headquartered in Cortona, a small, touristy yet friendly town.

The town square was surrounded with cafes to sit and watch the scene will sipping a Campari and soda.

It was the center of municipal activity

Including wedding after wedding.

Lots of little alleys to explore

A scene near out small hotel, which was the start ...

of a promenade through the park.

The wine cellar at our hotel, great place for a pizza party.

Tuscan towns are full of narrow walkways

The vineyards and the countryside were beautiful.

As were walks through various towns

... and the local sights

Pienza was a pleasant stop ...

Where a walk found any number of things ...

... hanging around.

An artist in Pienza.

Of course there were many churches

Our favorite by far was the Duomo in Sienna

We were lucky the mosaic floors were uncovered during our visit floor detail

We saw the main area ...

... as well as a recently opened room ...

with this amazing ceiling.

The Square at Sienna

Church outside Florence ...

... and its ancient well

Of course we visited Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi

A meal at a country hotel

This part of the trip ended in Florence, where the Ponte Vecchio spans the Arno River

You could see the city from a horse-drawn carriage.

Kept in order by these craftsmen. (My favorite photo of the trip)

The Square by the Uffizi Art Museum was packed with sculptures.

And the entrance to the musem was packed with people.

The garden at the Pitti Palace

Sculpture in the foreyard of the Pitti Palace

The goldsmiths on the Ponte Vecchio were a must for some shoppers.
