Quiet, beautiful isles on
the western edge of the volcanic ridge
Hours were
spent with the naturalists on board the MS Endeavour watching for sperm whales, dolphins and other sea life as we
sailed the wide stretches of Northern Atlantic Ocean.

We enter the tunnel that
takes us to the caldeira and dramatic landscape of the Furna do Enxofre
on Graciosoa. For some reason, we took few shots of this lovely island
and the pleasant village of Santa Cruz.
The emerald green landscape
and striking basalt formations of Flores helped make it one of our
favorite islands of the chain.
Here is a closer look at the
basalt cliffs of Flores.
Waterfalls are dot the rocky
cliffs on Flores.
And, everywhere, again,
there are the beautiful black and white cattle.
A curious goat watches as we
stroll on Faja Grande. The Ponta de Faja, just offshore is Europe's most
western point.
Near Flores is the tiny
island of Corvo, recently grown to 400 inhabitants, most of whom were on
hand to welcome us.
The farmers and shop keepers
of Corvo provided a convoy of cars and trucks to take us to the windy
volcano top to see the beautiful lakes in the caldeira.
Then we walked down the asphalt road
through mostly pastures to the harbor and the island's only town, Vila
Novo do Corvo. Stragglers were given lifts by farmers returning to town.
