We felt the most appealing, moving site we visited was the "Dawn of Happiness," Sukothai, the country's largest collection of ruins from the 13th century. Once, the kingdom of Siam's magical and spiritual center, it has many well-preserved columns, shrines, temples and statues. Here King Ramkamhaeng left chronicles of his accomplishments, including inventing the Thai script, the spread of Theravada Buddhism and developing relations with China.

The graceful "Walking Buddha" at Sukothai Natural dyes are used for the native indigo clothing, which goes from green to blue as it dries. Pupils at a school along the way welcomed our visit.

Some hill tribes open their villages to visitors. These boys have just finished a rowdy chase ahead of us. One of many rice paddies. The Golden Triangle, where the Mekong River separates Thailand, Burma and Laos.

The trip included a brief visit to Burma, rides in tuk-tuks, a local village and the hilltop Golden Pagoda. Young girls entertained at dinner with traditional dances.
