Costa Rican Woodcraft

A special thanks to COSTA RICA EXPEDITIONS, which has arranged 4 tours of Costa Rica that we've taken. Assisting Ruth Marie for this trip was CRE's Douglas Espinosa.

A trip without shopping? Well, just a bit maybe ... On the way to Sarchi. we pass through Grecia with its giant oxcart.

The historic Alfaro and Sons Workshop, founded in 1935,  wood-working shop is Sarchi's only real oxcart factory.

The wood-working machinery on the ground floor is still powered by a water wheel at the back of the shop.

A display of the carts' wheels as this uniquely Costa Rican art evolved from utilitarian to decorative.

Carpentry methods have changed little over the years.  The shop is now run by the "& Sons."

The workshop's main product is still an authentic oxcart, which sells for about $2,000.

Intricately carved chests and other items are produced as well as the brilliantly painted items.

The sense of fun in the shop can be seen in the lists of sayings hanging over the benches.

And in the dividers separating the urinals in the men's room.

A rest in the garden after our final lunch on the road.

Colorful flowers, as usual. (JD)

Mary awarded Canadian David a U.S. National Audubon pin for his exemplary and unceasing birding.

A special treat: Charlie's wife Vicky joined us for dinner on the final evening.

The "A" Team: Guide Charlie, David and Driver/Guide Niņo, Niņo also served as "bizcocho scout" to feed Mary's habit.

Breaking up was hard to do but was necessary. Front, Mary, Vicky, Ruth Marie, Miriam. Back, Jack, Jimmy, Charlie, Niņo, David.
